This past Friday night Crooked Bayou hosted Dublife Presents Starkey with was also billed as a birthday celebration for MC Collaborator.The night was filled with romping Dubstep sets by the birhtday boy himself Collaborator, and Miami's own Juan Basshead threw down massive set, with the night being capped off by Illadels finest Dj Starkey.

Ghostface "Baby" Video Shoot

Ghostface's new album The Wizard of Poetry is set to drop sometime next month and "Baby" is set to be his first single and video to promote the album. The buzz around the album is that it labeled Ghost's first R&B album. Don't take that the wrong way, GFK will not be singing on this album, the sharp darts are still there, the changes came in his choice to use live instrumentation throughout the album and outsourcing most of the chorus work on the album to R&B stars like Estelle, Raheem DeVaughn, and John Legend. posted by: Hypoetiks

Lushlife Cassette City Review

In Cassette City, Philly born multi-instrumentalist Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Halder, has found a beautiful mesh of beats and flows, delivering a very respectable sophomore release. This album came as a breath of fresh air in my inbox. Only a few tracks in, I was convinced that this is a serious release that needs to be recognized and realized by the public eye. This album spans neck breaking beats and airy Beach Boys harmonies that should satisfy the most intimate hip-hop head and the heart of indie kids alike.

As a classically trained musician, Raj has found a way to meld his polished knowledge base in music theory with raw and grimy samples. For the most part the feeling is on the hype and up-tempo side of things, with gems like “Another Word for Paradise” (featuring mid-90s representatives Camp Lo), where Raj prescribes a strong dose of boom bap beats, over horn and vocal stabs, nicely topped off with a serious amount of mid 90s hip-hop vocal samples in the choruses.

Cassette City is a definite gem; every song is out to uplift and refresh, like a tall glass of an acoustic Kool-Aid on a hot summer day. Enjoy.

James Brown Regrooved!

Goodgroove Records have gained worldwide recognition for their floor-filling funk and soul regrooves. Featurecast and Slynk were DJs at a monthly club night in southwest England with regrooves that became increasingly sought after in the DJ community. So, it was a natural progression for them to open a record label and officially release and sell their tracks. Their first release as an official label, Regrooved Series 1, was a collection of all the original tracks from their club night, and it turned out to be an overwhelming success. It’s with a serious track record of over twenty-five releases that GGR presents their latest, James Brown Regrooved. Luckily, this time you don’t have to wait a few weeks for your vinyl copies to come in the mail. (See link below.)

The free download release consists of nine James Brown classics regrooved by nine different artists on the Goodgroove label. The majority of the tracks are juiced up versions of the originals that rearrange the instrumentation and amp up the dynamics, like the incredible reworking of “Mind Power” by the Basement Freaks and the tremendous rolling drum n’ bass reworking of the sultry “Sunny”, a song originally penned by Bobby Hebb. These tracks tend to resemble the retouching that occurred throughout the Motown Remixed album series from a few years back that featured legends like Z-Trip and DJ Spinna.

With a wide international following and an increasing depth and diversity to their releases, Goodgrove are still at the height of their powers. Their healthy list of up and coming releases includes a Michael Jackson regroove album. Look out for it!

The Motherfucking Gaslamp Killer EP Review

Originally pressed as an ultra limited hand-signed 10” release, Gaslamp Killer’s My Troubled Mind was bumped into the digital universe courtesy of Flying Lotus’ Brain Feeder label earlier this month. Known around the world for his wicked DJ sets (e.g. his Hella International 2009 set) GLK has shown promising signs of outgrowing the turntables and elevating into a well-rounded producer.

The short EP-style release works well for artists, like GLK, who have a tremendous club scene buzz. Though the total run time may leave something to be desired, three out of the seven tracks (those that are actually full-length songs), can best be understood as regrooved Roger Corman soundtracks and other B-movie horror films from the 50s and 60s. GLK conjures a moody mindscape like a trip through a house of 1,000 organ grinders and a carnival of theremin echoes, all backed by his lead foot drum programming.

As a forecast for things to come, My Troubled Mind’s future-psych is a great teaser dosage, but if you’re in dire need of a little more GLK venom, many free mixes can be found on his MySpace. And, if you can find a copy of his OBEY Records mix release I Spit on Your Grave, (with tracks by Roots Manuva, Flying Lotus, among others), it’s guaranteed satisfaction.

Crookers @ LIV

It was a little over seven months ago that the Overthrow Army booked the Crookers at Heathrow, marking the first ever appearance for the Italian duo on American soil. To accommodate the Crookers mad dash to top rankings this time around the show was going to need a much bigger venue. The boys at Overthrow thought there no better place than LIV @ Fountain Bleau, where in just over a months time has host the likes of Aoki, MSTRKRFT, A-Trak, and L.A. Riots to name a few. As expected the turnout was tremendous and the Crookers, Pauly Crush, and Ross One did their thing into the wee hours of the night.
